Practical Tips and Common Pitfalls for Budget Travelers
Avoiding Overpriced “Official” Taxis
One of the biggest pitfalls for travelers is being approached by unofficial drivers offering “taxi” services. These individuals are not licensed and will often charge inflated rates. Always use the official taxi stands at the airport. A legitimate taxi will have a meter, and you should ensure the driver uses it. Be wary of any driver who offers a fixed price, as this is almost always higher than the metered fare.
Timing Your Journey to Save Money
Public transport fares in Istanbul are generally the same regardless of the time of day. However, the main cost-saving benefit of timing is avoiding the need for a taxi. If you arrive late at night when the metro and buses are less frequent, you may find yourself forced to take a more expensive taxi. Planning your arrival to coincide with regular public transport hours can save you a significant amount of money.
Luggage Considerations on Public Transport
The metro can be challenging with a Dubai Airport, especially during peak hours when the trains are crowded. Navigating the transfers at Gayrettepe and Taksim with heavy bags can be difficult. If you have more than one large suitcase, the Havaist bus is a much more practical choice, even if it costs a little more. The bus has dedicated luggage space, and you avoid the hassle of transferring.
