The Complete Answer: What Are Istanbul Airport Sleeping Pods?
These enclosed units offer a peaceful, bookable retreat right within the secure terminal zone. Istanbul Airport’s sleeping pods are operated by IGA and are located airside in the International Terminal, past passport control and security.
What Exactly Is a Sleeping Pod?
Definition: A sleeping pod is a compact, enclosed unit designed for one person to lie down and sleep in relative privacy.
A sleeping pod is not a hotel bed and not a lounge chair. It’s a self-contained unit with a flat surface, bedding, and lighting — typically with power outlets and ventilation. The design is meant to give you a few hours of genuine rest without the cost or hassle of a full hotel room. The key difference from a lounge chair is privacy. In a lounge, you’re in an open space with other travelers. In a pod, you’re enclosed, which means less noise and more control over your environment. The key difference from a hotel bed is size and cost. Pods are smaller and priced for short blocks of time rather than overnight stays. At Istanbul Airport, IGA’s pods start from €12 per hour, with 3-hour packages at €30 and 6-hour packages at €55. Designed for quick naps, each unit combines privacy and essential amenities for seamless transit comfort.
Where Are the Pods Located at Istanbul Airport?
The most important distinction to understand is airside vs. landside. Airside means you are inside the secure area, past passport control and security. Landside means you are in the public area before security. For transit passengers who cannot exit the airport, the location of the pods matters enormously. If the pods are airside, you can use them without needing a visa or re-entering security. If they are landside, you may not be able to access them at all. The pods at Istanbul Airport are located airside in the International Terminal, on the Mezzanine level near Gate D. This means they are inside the secure area, past passport control and security, so transit passengers can use them without leaving the transit area. Check the official IGA website or the airport map for the most up-to-date location.
Who Operates the Pods and How Do You Book Them?
The sleeping pods at Istanbul Airport are operated by IGA (Istanbul Grand Airport). Booking is available online through the official IGA website or the IGA app, with walk-in access subject to availability. Advance booking is recommended during peak travel times, especially if you have a tight connection. If you are in transit and have a tight connection, advance booking is often the safer choice, especially during peak travel times. However, walk-in availability may exist if the pods are not fully booked. Before you rely on a pod, confirm the operator’s current policy on booking, payment, and time limits. IGA’s current policy allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before your booking time. The most reliable source is the official IGA website or the IGA app.
Where to Find Sleeping Pods at Istanbul Airport (Terminal & Location Guide)
The pods are located airside in the International Terminal, on the Mezzanine level near Gate D. Follow the signs for “Sleep Pods” or “Rest Areas” after passing security.
Terminal-by-Terminal Breakdown
Istanbul Airport has a single main terminal building, and the pods are located in the International Departures area, airside. Specifically, they are on the Mezzanine level near Gate D. Check the current terminal map on the IGA website for the most up-to-date location. If you are transferring, look for signs pointing to rest areas or sleep facilities. The pods are often located near gates or in central areas of the terminal, but you should not rely on this without checking.
Airside vs. Landside: What You Need to Know
The airside/landside distinction is critical for layover passengers. If you are in international transit, you may not be able to leave the secure area without a visa or a transit hotel booking. If the pods are airside, you can access them without leaving the transit area. If they are landside, you would need to go through passport control, which may not be possible depending on your nationality and visa status. The pods at Istanbul Airport are airside, which means transit passengers can access them without leaving the secure area. This is confirmed on the official IGA website. Always confirm the side of the airport the pods are on before you book. This single detail can determine whether the pods are a viable option for your layover.
Navigating to the Pods from Arrival or Transfer
Once you land, follow the signs for transfers or the main terminal. Look for information displays that show rest areas or sleep facilities. If you cannot find the pods, approach an information kiosk or airport staff member and ask for the current location. The pods are located on the Mezzanine level near Gate D, so follow signs for “Sleep Pods” or “Rest Areas” after passing security.
Quick Answer: To find the sleeping pods at Istanbul Airport, start by checking the official airport map or asking at an information desk. The pods are in the terminal, but their exact location can vary — confirm airside vs. landside before you go.
How to Book and Access Sleeping Pods in Istanbul Airport (Step-by-Step)
Booking a pod at Istanbul Airport is straightforward, whether you reserve online or walk in.
Step-by-Step Guide to Booking a Pod
- Determine your layover length. The pods are airside, so transit passengers can access them without leaving the secure area.
- Check the current location (Mezzanine level near Gate D) and operating hours before you travel.
- Decide whether to book in advance on the IGA website or IGA app, or try to walk in.
- If booking online, use the official IGA website or app.
- Arrive at the pod area on the Mezzanine level and follow the check-in instructions.
- Set your alarm and confirm the check-out time before you fall asleep.
- Collect your belongings and head to your next flight.
What to Expect at Check-In
At check-in, you will likely need to provide your boarding pass and a form of payment. The operator (IGA) will confirm your booking time and explain the time limit for your pod. Standard sessions are typically 1-4 hours, with packages up to 6 hours available. The time limit is important. Pods are designed for short rest periods, so you will need to know exactly when your session ends. If your layover is longer than the maximum booking duration, you may need to book a second session or consider an alternative.
Cancellation and Refund Policies
Cancellation and refund policies vary by operator. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, your booking may or may not be refundable. The safest approach is to read the terms and conditions before booking, and to contact the operator’s support team if you need to change or cancel. IGA’s current policy allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before your booking time. No-shows are charged the full amount.

When to Choose a Sleeping Pod Over a Lounge
Pods are the better choice if you value privacy and a flat surface for sleeping. A lounge gives you access to food, drinks, and often showers, but you’ll be in an open space with other travelers. If your main goal is a few hours of uninterrupted sleep, a pod is the better option. At €12 per hour, a pod is often more cost-effective than a lounge for a short nap. If you need to work, eat, or shower, a lounge may serve you better.
When to Choose a Transit Hotel Over a Sleeping Pod
Transit hotels are the right choice for overnight layovers or when you need a proper bed and a shower. They offer more space and comfort, but they come at a higher cost. Pods are more cost-effective for shorter, daytime rest periods. If you have a 4-hour layover in the middle of the day, a pod is likely a better fit than a hotel room. For a 10-hour overnight layover, a transit hotel may be worth the extra cost. Transit hotels at Istanbul Airport start from around €80 for a 4-hour block.
Practical Tips for Using Istanbul Airport Sleeping Pods (Amenities, Rules, and What to Bring)
Make the most of your pod with these practical tips on amenities, rules, and what to bring.
What Amenities Are Included (and What Are Not)
Standard inclusions in a sleeping pod typically include bedding, a pillow, a blanket, power outlets, and a reading light. These are the basics you need for a comfortable nap. Common exclusions are food, showers, toiletries, and luggage storage. Pods are designed for sleeping, not as a full-service hotel. If you need a shower or a meal, you will need to use other airport facilities.
Rules and Etiquette You Should Know
Quiet hours and noise restrictions may apply in the pod area. You should avoid making noise that disturbs other sleepers. Eating and drinking inside the pod may be restricted. Luggage policies also vary — some pods have storage space inside, while others may require you to store bags nearby. The pod is typically strictly for one person, so you cannot share it with a travel companion. IGA’s pods have a strict one-person policy. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM.
What to Bring to Maximize Your Rest
- A sleep mask and earplugs, even if the pod has some light and sound insulation.
- A portable charger or power bank, in case the pod’s outlets are limited.
- A small lock for your luggage, if bags are stored outside the pod.
- Your boarding pass and passport for check-in.
- A comfortable change of clothes if you plan to sleep for several hours.
