Choosing between the M11 metro and a taxi for your Istanbul Airport (IST) transfer in 2026 is one of the first decisions you’ll make in the city. - The best choice depends on arrival time, luggage, hotel location, and budget.
- Current 2026 fares and travel times should be checked before travel, as they can change.

The Short Answer
Quick Answer: For most travelers, the M11 metro is the better option when you’re staying near a metro transfer station like Gayrettepe, Levent, or Kağıthane, and you arrive during operating hours. A taxi is the clear winner for late-night arrivals, heavy luggage, or destinations far from the metro network.
The metro is generally cheaper, faster in normal traffic, and more predictable. A taxi is more convenient but costs more and can be significantly delayed by Istanbul’s traffic.

The Long Answer: Key Differences That Matter
The fundamental differences between the M11 metro and a taxi come down to cost, time, and convenience.
Cost: The metro uses a flat, low-cost fare paid with an Istanbulkart or contactless card. A taxi uses a metered fare plus an official airport surcharge. The metro is almost always cheaper, but the total cost of a metro journey can rise if you need to take a connecting taxi from the metro terminal to your hotel.
Time: The M11 metro runs on a dedicated track, so it is not affected by traffic. The journey from the airport to Gayrettepe takes roughly 30 minutes. A taxi journey to Taksim or other central areas typically takes 30 to 45 minutes in light traffic but can take much longer during rush hours or on busy days.
Convenience: A taxi takes you directly to your hotel door. The metro requires you to navigate the airport, reach the metro station, ride to your transfer station, and then take a connecting metro or taxi to your final destination.
When Each Option Wins
The metro is the clear winner when:
- You arrive during operating hours (roughly early morning to late night).
- You have light luggage and are comfortable walking.
- Your hotel is near a metro transfer station or you’re willing to take a short connecting ride.
- You want to avoid traffic unpredictability.
The taxi is the clear winner when:
- You arrive late at night or very early in the morning.
- You have heavy or multiple pieces of luggage.
- Your hotel is far from the metro network.
- You’re traveling with family or on a tight schedule.
M11 Metro: Route, Frequency, and Real-World Usability (2026 Perspective)
Where the M11 Actually Goes (and Where It Doesn’t)
The M11 metro line runs from Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe on the European side of the city. The line passes through stations including Yeniköy, Göktürk, and Kağıthane before reaching the central transfer hubs. Key transfer points include Levent, where you can connect to the M2 metro line, and Gayrettepe, which also connects to the M2 line. Kağıthane is a major transit hub that links to other parts of the city.
The M11 metro does not go to every city center location. It ends at Gayrettepe, so if your hotel is in Taksim, Sultanahmet, or other central areas, you will need to transfer to the M2 metro or take a short taxi ride.
Definition: The M11 is an Istanbul metro line that connects Istanbul Airport (IST) to Gayrettepe via a dedicated underground route. It is part of the city’s expanding rail network and is designed to provide a fast, traffic-free airport transfer.
Frequency, Operating Hours, and Travel Time
The M11 operates with regular headways throughout the day. The exact frequency and first/last train times change with the city’s schedule, so it’s essential to check the current Istanbul Airport Metro M11: Full Guide, Timetable, Fares online before you travel. The M11 does not run 24 hours. It operates during set hours, typically from early morning to late night. If you arrive after the last train, a taxi is your only practical option.
If you’re weighing alternatives, note that the HAVAIST shuttle also runs from the airport to various points in the city, but the metro is generally faster and cheaper for most routes.

How to Choose: A Step-by-Step Decision Guide
The 4-Step Decision Process
- Check your arrival time and hotel location. If you arrive when the metro is running and your hotel is near a transfer station, the metro is likely your best bet. If you arrive late at night, a taxi is the safer choice.
- Estimate your luggage and foot traffic tolerance. If you have heavy luggage or will struggle with stairs and transfers, a taxi is more comfortable.
- Calculate total door-to-door time. For the metro, add the time to reach the station, the ride, the transfer, and the walk or connecting ride to your hotel. For a taxi, consider the traffic at your arrival time.
- Decide based on budget and flexibility. If you want to save money and don’t mind a transfer, take the metro. If you value convenience and directness, take a taxi.
Practical Considerations
Use a maps app to check real-time traffic before you decide, especially if you’re arriving during rush hour. Also, check the last train time for the M11 if you’re landing late. Keeping both options in mind and having a backup plan will make your transfer smoother.
