Definition of IST Departure
Definition: IST is the IATA airport code for Istanbul Airport (Istanbul Havalimanı), the main international airport serving Istanbul, Turkey. An IST departure is the entire process of leaving from this airport — from entering the terminal to boarding your flight.
IST opened in 2018 and replaced Atatürk Airport as Istanbul’s primary international gateway. It serves as the main hub for Turkish Airlines and connects Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Quick Answer: IST departure is the process of leaving Istanbul Airport, covering check-in, security screening, immigration, and boarding. It includes a unique entry security check that most airports don’t have.

Why IST Departure Is Different
The first thing that sets IST apart is the security screening at the entrance to the terminal. Before you can reach check-in counters, you must pass through an initial security check. This is a deliberate design to reduce congestion inside the departure hall, but it means your journey starts earlier than at most airports.
IST also operates from a single massive terminal building. Domestic and international departures share the same structure, though they use different zones and procedures. For international flights, you’ll go through security screening and then passport control before reaching the gate area.
For transfer passengers, IST has dedicated transit procedures that allow connecting travelers to move between international flights without exiting the terminal, offering amenities comparable to Exploring Fez: a perfect layover experience at the airport and the old medina. This makes it a major hub for long-haul connections.
IST Departure Terminals and Layout
Terminal Structure at a Glance
IST’s main terminal is one of the largest single-terminal buildings in the world. The departures level is organized into check-in islands, with each airline assigned to specific counters. After check-in, you’ll pass through security screening and, for international flights, immigration before entering the airside area.
The gate area is divided into multiple zones, each with its own boarding gates. Once you’re airside, you’ll find lounges, restaurants, and duty-free shops spread across the concourses.
Navigating the Departure Hall
When you enter the terminal, look for your airline’s check-in island. Most airlines are grouped by alliance or location, so following the signage for your carrier is the quickest route. After dropping your bags, head to the nearest security checkpoint.
For international departures, passport control comes after security. The terminal has both manual counters and automated gates for eligible passports. Allow extra time during peak hours, as queues can build quickly.
Here’s how domestic and international departure procedures compare:
| Aspect | Domestic Departure | International Departure |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in location | Same main terminal, designated domestic islands | Same main terminal, designated international islands |
| Security screening | Entry screening + security check | Entry screening + security check |
| Passport control | Not required | Required before boarding |
| Time recommendation | 2 hours before departure | 3 hours before departure |
Step-by-Step IST Departure Process
Step 1: Arrival and Entry Security
When you arrive at the terminal, you’ll go through an initial security screening before you can access the check-in area. This is unique to IST and is designed to keep the departure hall safer and more organized. Have your passport or ID ready, and be prepared to place your bags on the X-ray belt.
Step 2: Check-In and Bag Drop
Find your airline’s check-in counters in the departure hall. If you checked in online, you can use the self-service kiosks to print baggage tags and proceed directly to the bag drop. Most airlines open check-in counters at least 3 hours before international flights.
Step 3: Security Screening
After check-in, you’ll go through the main security screening. Liquids must be in containers no larger than 100ml and placed in a clear bag. Electronics, laptops, and power banks should be removed from your bag and placed in the tray.
Step 4: Immigration and Passport Control
For international departures, passport control is located after security. Have your passport and visa (if required) ready. Automated gates are available for eligible passports, while manual counters serve all other travelers. Keep your boarding pass accessible throughout.
Step 5: Boarding
Once through immigration, find your gate on the flight information screens. Boarding times vary by airline, so check your boarding pass and the gate screens for the exact time. Be at your gate at least 15 minutes before the scheduled boarding time.
Quick Answer: Plan to arrive 3 hours before an international flight at IST to complete entry security, check-in, security screening, and immigration without rushing.

Frequently Asked Questions About IST Departure
How early should I arrive at Istanbul Airport for an international flight?
For an international IST departure, plan to arrive at least 3 hours before your scheduled flight time. This allows ample time to complete the entry security check at the terminal entrance, check in and drop your bags, go through the main security screening, and clear passport control. If you have already checked in online and only need to drop your bags, you might manage with 2.5 hours, but 3 hours is the safest recommendation—especially during peak travel seasons or if you plan to use the lounges or duty-free shopping.
What documents do I need to have ready for the IST departure process?
You should have your passport or national ID, your boarding pass (digital or printed), and any required visa for your destination. Keep these accessible from the moment you arrive, as you’ll need them at entry security, check-in, and passport control. If you’re a Turkish citizen traveling domestically, an ID card is sufficient. For international flights, ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates and that you carry any supporting documents like visas, residence permits, or return tickets.
Can I access the Turkish Airlines lounges at IST if I’m flying economy class?
Yes, you can access the Turkish Airlines lounges at IST even if you hold an economy ticket. While business class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members enjoy complimentary access, economy passengers can often purchase entry through paid access programs or lounge membership schemes. The lounges offer comfortable seating, dining, showers, and workspaces—ideal if you’re arriving early for your IST departure. Check with your airline or the lounge entrance directly, as availability and pricing may vary depending on the time of day and lounge capacity.
Is passport control required for domestic flights at Istanbul Airport?
No, passport control is not required for domestic departures from IST. Domestic travelers go through the entry security check and the main security screening, but they skip the immigration and passport control step that international passengers must complete. This is why the recommended arrival time for domestic flights is only 2 hours before departure compared to 3 hours for international flights. However, you will still need to present a valid ID at check-in and security.
What are the specific security screening rules for liquids and electronics at IST?
At the main security screening, liquids must be in containers no larger than 100ml and placed together in a clear, resealable plastic bag. Each passenger is limited to one such bag, typically with a maximum capacity of 1 liter. Electronics—including laptops, tablets, and power banks—must be removed from your carry-on bag and placed in a separate tray for X-ray screening. Power banks must be carried in your cabin luggage only; they are strictly prohibited in checked baggage. Ensure your bags are organized to move through the screening process quickly and avoid delays.
